Ineffective Instruction Will Cause Learning and Achievement Issues For Your Students
Ineffective Instruction Will Cause Learning and Achievement Issues For Your StudentsThe goal of your step by step informational expository writing, essay, English class is to give students some knowledge about a subject. While the majority of students take the information from the course material and make a cursory study of it, few actually apply what they learned and get any work done. You will need to show them how to do this as part of your instruction in order to continue to use your course material.Step by step instruction provides an overview of the topics that are covered in your class. Your instruction can be discussed on any given subject, but I have found it particularly effective to teach English Writing to help ESL students develop their understanding of punctuation and capitalization rules. Not all students need the same instructions, and it's not easy to teach each student about the topic in an hour. It would also be counterproductive to have them go over the material i n a hurried manner.Learning is hard to learn, but having the right teaching strategies in place is even harder. Sometimes the easiest teaching approach is a step by step approach, and sometimes it is just an explanation of one concept in isolation. The learning curve is steep and time consuming for students. Why not use that time to help them discover the various ways in which they can go about learning? Make use of a 'package' approach by teaching the material in the logical order, and don't leave it too much to chance.Order is an essential technique. Teaching the material in an overly logical or haphazard way will result in a student who can hardly apply what they have learned. When the entire lesson is organized into a logical sequence, you will be able to use the material much more effectively and clearly.Traditional classroom environment allows time for studentsto ask questions, demonstrate, and perhaps do research. In an interactive approach to instruction, the teacher can all ow students to do their own research and understand things better. Since so many students do not like the traditional classroom environment, it is better to keep them in a structured, lecture-style format. Letting them think about how to answer questions gives them a sense of autonomy. After all, why shouldn't they be able to develop their own responses and problems?Teaching in a lecture style does have advantages however. It is nice to know that there is only one teacher and one class. The room is full of people, and there is a camaraderie.Instruction doesn't have to be rigidly structured, but does need to be in a way that allows students to learn independently and in their own time. During the lecture, provide a number of examples so students can understand what is being taught. Then, after the lecture, give them some freedom to work on projects or activities. Encourage students to ask questions or participate in group projects if they feel that they still need additional informat ion.The most successful English courses make use of step by step instructional material. With careful planning and effective instruction, the course can be taught effectively without leaving students feeling frustrated. In fact, the success of your class is enhanced by the thought that so many students were given instruction and opportunity to learn in a cohesive way.
